May in South Shields:

Events, Entertainment & Seaside Days

May in South Shields brings a lively mix of family-friendly events, local entertainment and seaside experiences, especially around the half-term period.

Highlights include a variety of activities at The Word, from arts and crafts sessions to interactive events like The Zorkk Games, alongside a strong line-up of shows and performances at The Customs House.

Throughout the month, there’s plenty to enjoy across the area, including the return of the South Tyneside Festival, weekly markets, and opportunities to experience local music and talent. Families can also take part in heritage walks and relaxed community sessions such as “Knit and Natter,” adding to the welcoming feel of the town.

May is also a great time to explore some of South Shields’ most popular attractions, including Arbeia Roman Fort, South and North Marine Parks, Ocean Beach Pleasure Park and the coastal walks around Souter Lighthouse and Marsden Bay. With longer days and warmer weather, it’s ideal for making the most of the seafront and surrounding areas.

As always, event details may change, so we recommend checking local listings ahead of your visit.

South Shields Market runs every week with a great mix of local traders, offering fresh produce, gifts, crafts and everyday essentials. Located in the heart of the town centre, it’s a lovely spot to browse during your stay and support our local community.
